On Wednesday, October 18th, we went on our
longest trek in our 30 horsepower vehicle: to San Gimignano and then to
Siena. Round trip was perhaps 150 km? Lisa did a great job of navigating. We bought some maps of the two towns that proved invaluable. Siena is really a small city complete with highway bypasses to divert you around it. San Gimignano was on our ten best Tuscan book as the most beautiful hill town in Tuscany. It lived up to its billing and the weather was glorious. Towers were a sign of wealth in medieval times and this town had the most (14?). It also boasted 4 of the top ten restaurants in Tuscany. Perhaps a place to stay on the return. We saw the Duomo and I climbed Torre Rosso to take some pictures. We found a beautiful church in our guidebook (Sant'Agostino), purchased some art and had a great lunch at the Piazza there. After lunch, we went to Siena navigated to the right parking lot and toured the entire afternoon (all sights open between 1 and 4!!).j Dinner took us into Cortona again to La Buccacia. We bought a Super Tuscan and the owner proceeded to share our bottle with honeymooners at the next table and insisted they reciprocate. Online he seems to have a reputation as a real comedian. Not to funny when someone takes your vino!!
