On Sunday, October 16th, we
headed out for a full day in Florence (Firenza) by train. We went from the
small station of Terontola directly into Florence (about 70 minutes).
Another saga of train travel: the tickets we had are open for 30 days from
the city pair printed on the ticket and the class of service (1st or 2nd). What the trainman couldn't/didn't tell us was that Sunday has a different (lighter schedule). We got at the station by 6:20 for a 6:50 train and had to wait till 7:40 in the freezing cold. See the first picture below, it was just us and the guy pushing the broom. After arrival, my online pre-booking paid off. W saw the Palazzo Pitti, the home of the Medici family for many years, the Uffizi museum, Ponte Vecchio, Duomo and the Galleria dell'Accademia with Michelangelo's amazing statue of David before meeting our friend Karen for drinks on the Piazza di San Marco. I used the online service, Florence Art, and would highly recommend it to avoid lines. On return, we bought prosciutto and pecorino and olives and ate in the room with a nice bottle of Chianti Classico. |
